Mid-Day Notes

  1. The Miami Hurricanes never had a chance. I’m starting to believe that we may see the Sooners in the national championship game. Sam Bradford has been very impressive in his first two games. The defense is strong, and the running game is great. This may be the most well-rounded team in the country.
  2. California survived Colorado State. CSU may be 0-2 right now, but I think they will be a pretty good team in conference play. Keep an eye on them.
  3. Calvin Dawson ran for 120 yards for Louisiana-Monroe against Clemson. How did all the BCS teams miss out on this guy?
  4. Nebraska’s 20-17 win over Wake Forest was a very good win. Just as I said Colorado State’s 0-2 record may turn out to be deceiving, Wake Forest’s 0-2 start does not do this team justice.  They could win any of their remaining games, and very well may end up with 9-plus wins. Jim Grobe has done an amazing job with that program.
  5. I had a rough afternoon listening to my Miami(OH) Redhawks lose to Minnesota in triple-overtime. The Golden Gophers did everything they could to give the game to Miami at the end, and the Redhawks just could not close the deal. After Minnesota missed a field goal in the second-overtime, Miami was in prime position to win with their own field goal…and pushed it wide. Kudos goes to back-up (well, maybe not anymore) quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh, who came into the game with about five minutes left to play and led the Redhawks back from a 28-12 deficit.
  6. Washington is up 24-10 on Boise State. There’s a long way to go, but regardless of what happens, the Huskies looks like the real deal. There was more to last week’s win than a terrible Syracuse team.
  7. Every time I watch Matt Ryan play, I fall more in love with him.
  8. Oregon is beating Michigan 32-7 at halftime. “Beating” really is the right word. Oregon has looked very good. I think a lot of people expected Michigan to be like Ohio State last year- A completely retooled defense that steps in and doesn’t miss a step. Michigan is no Ohio State. Their defense does not look good at all. They may improve as the season goes on and as they face more Big Ten offenses (i.e., non-spread offenses), but they have been exposed. I hope there is a lot of security on hand, because if the Wolverines lose this game the fans may rush the field and hang Lloyd Carr from the goal posts.

A lot of great games coming up tonight, so stay tuned.

This is the weirdest damn start to any season I can remember. Cincy killing OSU, Michigan’s start, Washington looking like a real threat. And Fresno State? That game was insane, they’re going to be legit in the WAC.
